How to Make an Imu

How to Make an Imu

PJ Coito, Grade 9

Whenever we have parties my family and I make an imu. So first you have to dig a hole then you have to get firewood to put on the bottom. Then you need to get rock but it has to be a specific type of rock, you have to get the rock from Waipio but to take something you have to give something. Next after you get the rocks you light the fire and while you wait for the fire to die down you have to clean the pig or pigs and you have to pick T-leaf and cut down a few banana trees depending on how big the imu is. Last if the fire still has flames coming out of the rocks yet you still have to wait but, if no more flames it’s ready so you would want to put all the banana stumps after you shred them put it on the rocks cover um till no can see the rocks, then you put the pig and  can put pans of other food or whatever you like then you will put the T-leaf on and cover the pig and the pans and then you will put burlap bag but the burlap bags have to be soaked with water. So you will put all the burlap bags on the imu then last you put  plastic over and you have to put dirt around to keep the smoke in. Last,  you should end up with a giant air bubble in the middle. The next day you will have to dig all the dirt of and pull of the plastic and take out whatever is in there; pigs and pans, then just will put um on a table in a giant metal pan and you have to shred the pig take out all the bones and when I say all, I mean the smallest bone ever then one u pau do that you have to let it cool down then you can bag um and put um in a cooler with ice then take um home and freeze um, then pau.
