Climate Change is a Huge Problem

Climate Change is a Huge Problem

Mikael Caverly, Gr. 9

Climate change is a big problem for the world. It is a big problem because it is melting glaciers and ice caps, sea levels are rising, and there are more storms and bigger storms. because sea levels are rising, temperatures are more extreme. Consequently, it is  causing more fires and kills many crops as well. Climate change also kills many animals year round. It is a huge problem now and we need to stop it.

Have you noticed that bigger storms have been happening more often? For example a storm that hit the island of Hawaii this year was very bad in south Kona. There were super strong winds and terrible weather. Somebody’s roof even flew off. The storm was a called a “Kona Low” and that’s a type of cyclone that occurs in the Pacific’s cool season which brings torrential rains, floods, waterspouts and other hazardous conditions (Hernandes).

In other places, climate change is making ice caps melt which raises sea levels. Polar ice caps are melting as global warming causes climate change. We lose Arctic sea ice at a rate of almost 13% per decade, and over the past 30 years, the oldest and thickest ice in the Arctic has declined by a stunning 95% (Six ways loss of Arctic ice impacts everyone).

Climate change is making big fires more common; it has been a key factor in increasing the risk and extent of wildfires in the Western United States. Wildfire risk depends on a number of factors, including temperature, soil moisture, and the presence of trees, shrubs, and other potential fuel. All these factors have strong direct or indirect ties to climate variability and climate change (Wildfires and Climate Change).

Some people say that climate change doesn’t affect the world and isn’t bad, but it is proven that climate change is harming the planet by making rare disasters happen more often and making bad weather more severe. Climate change is a problem and changing the environment with higher sea levels, more super storms, and forest fires. What can we do?  We can help fix this by using less fossil fuels, not having as big and as many factories, and making less pollution.
